Dawie Maartens

Dawie obtained his B.Comm.(Law) and LL.B. degrees from the University of Stellenbosch and was admitted as an attorney (with right of appearance in the High Court) in 2003.

Since his admission, he has gained extensive experience in High Court litigation, Magistrate’s Court litigation (both civil and criminal) and Arbitration proceedings.

From 2008 and until the formation of MLR with Marius le Roux in 2019, Dawie focused upon and specialised in the law of delict at DSC Attorneys, a well-known and respected firm specializing in personal injury litigation. He was also involved in international litigation concerning a matter against De Beers Marine Namibia which ran for a number of years in the Namibian High Court as well as the Namibian Supreme Court of Appeals before finally ending in a beneficial settlement for his client.

Shortly after MLR opened its doors, the need for affordable and high quality commercial legal services with a fast turn-around time became apparent, not only for small to medium companies, but also large national public companies. MLR soon acquired an impressive list of commercial clients, spanning the entire spectrum from start-up to public companies which enabled Dawie to hone his craft in respect of drafting a wide variety of commercial contracts.

In addition, Dawie provides personal legal services to various individual clients which include family law (divorce and maintenance disputes), civil litigation, personal injury litigation, legal malpractice litigation and criminal representation.

Dawie also acts as correspondent for various law firms across South Africa, assisting in civil litigation in both the High Court and Magistrate’s Court.

Dawie lectures in personal injury law as part the Law Society of South Africa’s LEAD program which equips candidate legal practitioners to prepare for the board exams in order to become qualified legal practitioners.
